Taco Truck Ordering App

PROJECT: Local community favorite Taco Truck needs an app to help it’s clients order more conveniently and efficiently.

DURATION: March 2022 - May 2022

ROLE: UX Researcher, Usability Tester, UX Designer

CONTRIBUTION: Research, Competitive Audit, Wireframing, Prototyping, Testing

THE PROBLEM: Create an app that is efficient as well as easy to use so that the Taco Trucks clients can order with ease.

THE GOAL: Our Taco Truck app will let users review menu items to customize and place orders which will in return allow them to pick up orders quickly by allowing them to order ahead of time and skip the line while on the go.

The main pain point that I focused on was Time, people want to be able to find what they want and order quickly. So streamlining this process became my key focus. People shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes at most to order their food.

PERSONAS

What we can take away from these personas is that our users are busy and want to get the food that they love not only customized to their needs but also as efficiently as possible. Making this a top pain point was what helped in centering our focus on the user.

USER JOURNEY MAP

PAPER WIREFRAMES

I noticed that the large “Order” and “Phone” buttons really stood out on the homepage and would help customers get right to ordering without having to search too much.

I liked the option of the cart at the bottom to help with usability and not get confusing with the menu navigation. Which lead to the idea of all the navigation being on the bottom. Since this is a mobile app, it may be easier if everything is within thumb reach.

DIGITAL WIREFRAMES

As the main pain point for customers is ordering quickly, I wanted to make sure that the Order button stands out and is easy to find by putting them front and center.

Also having other menu items photos as quick buttons as shortcuts to order is also a faster option for customers, as well as a great way to promote new menu items for the company.

Large photos of the menu items will help customers to see the ingredients and hopefully will help with knowing that they are ordering and have some expectations as to how their order will be made.

Customization is key for a lot of customers, so I wanted to create a way to quickly make changes to their items. Customers will be able to toggle items on and off to be able to make changes to their orders easily.

USABILITY STUDY

Streamlining became the focus after the first usability study. There seemed to be too much on the homepage, so we wanted to eliminate what wasn’t essential to the ordering process and just get right to what the users need to find. As you can see in the mockups that follow, I changed the the homepage to feature the quick links easily and made then the main focus.

IMPACT: This app really wants the customers to know that they are in control of their orders and how their food is made, which is a major concern for the Taco Truck as well.

WHAT I LEARNED: Sizing of buttons is a major factor, as well as making sure that there are multiple buttons throughout the app to direct people to key features. Not everyone takes the same path so having a few options helps more people.
